Stress Levels of Parents of Infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Coping Methods

INTRODUCTION: An unexpected birth and then the admission of the baby to the intensive care unit is a great source of anxiety and stress for families. In this study, aimed to reveal the stress levels, and the stress factors of the parents of the infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and the methods of coping with these.
METHODS: Research environment of this descriptive study consisted of parents of infants who were hospitalized in a tertiary NICU of a university hospital. For the data collection, Parents and Infants Description Form, Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit were used.
RESULTS: A total of 81 parents participated in the study. The mean scores of parents obtained from sights and sounds subgroup were 3.32±0.6 (moderately stressful), from infant behavior and appearance subgroup were 3.58±0.5 (very stressed), from parental role subgroup were 3.51±0.7 (very stressed), and the overall score average was found to be 3.51±0.6 (very stressed). It has been determined that parents of premature babies, parents of infants with a birth weight of 1500 grams or less, and parents of intubated infants are more stressed. Parents, as ways of coping with stress, have indicated that they want to take care of babies and want to know more about their infants and intensive care environment.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: More inclusion of the parents to care for their babies in NICU and more information may help to reduce the stress on them.

Yenidoğan Yoğun Bakım Ünitesinde Bebeği Yatan Ailelerin Stres Düzeyleri ve Baş Etme Yöntemleri

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Beklenmedik bir şekilde gerçekleşen bir doğum ve ardından bebeğin yoğun bakım ünitesine yatışı, aileler için büyük bir kaygı ve stres kaynağıdır. Bu çalışmada, yenidoğan yoğun bakım ünitesine (YYBÜ) bebeği yatan ebeveynlerin stres düzeyleri, etmenleri ve stres ile baş etme yöntemlerinin ortaya konması amaçlanmıştır.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Bu tanımlayıcı çalışmaya, bir üniversite hastanesi 3. düzey YYBÜ’de, Ocak 2017- Ocak 2018 tarihleri arasında bebeği yatan ebeveynler dahil edilmişlerdir. Veri toplama aracı olarak; anne-baba tanıtım formu, bebek tanıtım formu ve “YYBÜ Anne-Baba Stres Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır.
BULGULAR: Çalışmaya toplam 81 ebeveyn katılmıştır. Ebeveynlerin YYBÜ Anne-Baba Stres Ölçeği Görüntü ve Sesler alt grubu puan ortalaması 3.32±0.6 (orta derecede stresli), Bebeğin Görünümü ve Davranışları alt grubu puan ortalaması 3.58±0.5 (çok stresli), Anne-Baba Rolü alt grubu puan ortalaması 3.51±0.7 (çok stresli), genel puan ortalaması da 3.51±0.6 (çok stresli) olarak bulunmuştur. Öncesinde düşük yapan annelerin, prematüre bebeklerin ailelerinin, doğum kilosu 1500 gram ve altı olan bebek ebeveynlerin, bebeği solunum cihazına bağlanmış olan ebeveynlerin daha stresli olduğu saptanmıştır. Ailelerin stresle baş etme yöntemi olarak en çok bebeklerin bakımına katılma istekleri ve daha fazla bilgi almak istedikleri görülmüştür.
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: YYBÜ’ne bebeklerinin yatışı aileler tarafından çok stresli bir durum olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Ebeveynlerin YYBÜ’lerinde bebeklerinin bakımlarına daha fazla katılımlarının sağlanması ve daha fazla bilgilendirilmeleri üzerlerindeki stresin azalmasını sağlayabilir.
